What’s in a Name?

When I was younger, I studied Kay Arthur’s wonderful Bible Study about the Names of God, “Lord I Want to Know You”. I highly recommend it!

God’s names in the Bible reflect His character and how He relates to us – yep, you and me – us common kids down here on dirty earth.

Rest assured, God’s down here in the dirt with us, folks.

❤️God doesn’t  just know us, He knows us deeply, intimately, completely.

God’s list of names is long, but, since I have a short attention span, I’m gonna share two and focus on others later:

Check it out!

El Roi – The God who SEES – God promises He’s keeping an eye on us no matter where we are.

Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is PEACE – Run to HIM, folks. You’ll find peace there.

The Bible Stories behind these two names are awesome.

The Type A lady is going to give you her rough run-down on each.

El Roi – The God Who Sees – Genesis 16

What you’ve got here folks is a servant, Hagar, who is scorned.  Yikes!  She’s done what her owner, Sarai, wanted…but now jealousy has set in. Hagar has gotten an attitude and Sarai is mistreating Hagar.  Good grief! Controversy!  – Can you relate?

Hagar can’t take it any more so she runs away into the desert.   Hagar must be desperate .  She’s probably regretting a few things.  On top of all that…Hagar is pregnant.

I’m thinking Hagar is feeling lonely. I bet she’s pretty sad.  (Be sure to read Genesis 16 to get the rest of the juicy story!)

Long story short, God sends and angel to tell Hagar she is NOT alone!  God SEES her…He even promises her some things if she will just return home.

Hagar is very grateful.  Here’s how the Bible puts it:

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me. – Genesis 16:13

Hmmm…Can you relate ?

Oh, I know I’ve not been a pregnant servant in the desert, but I sure have been a weary worker wondering if God sees my mess and will rescue me.

Beloved friends, God sees you. El Roi not only sees you, but He knows what you are going through

even when you’re in a desert without hope.

Hang in there. Look to God. God sees what you are going through. He’ll give you peace…

Jehovah Shalom – The Lord is Peace 🙏

In Judges 6, people were doing their own thing…basically the wrong thing.  They were conquered and had to hide out from their enemies.  What a mess!

The people cried out to God.

😢“Where are you, God? How could this happen to us?” 😢

God answered –

“Peace be to you. Do not fear.”

(Basically, God was saying: “I am here. I am peace.”)

Man…can I relate!  How many of us have asked, “Where are you in my mess, God?”

God says… “I am right here. I am peace

When we enter into a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior,

He’ll give us a place of peace, even in the chaos and confusion of life.

👉Turn to Jesus…lover of your soul.  Tell Him you’re sorry.  Throw open the closet doors of your life.  Let in the God of Peace, Jehovah Shalom.

Here’s a great prayer for those of you who want to be seen and protected by our wonderful Savior…The God who SEES …The God of PEACE.

Dear Jesus,

I’m a mess! I’m so sorry for the things I’ve done wrong. I know you died on the cross to cover my sin and the sins of those who hurt me. I know you came back from death to give us all hope and a future when we invite you in. I ask you to come into my life. Please take over everything. I need you. I give everything to you. Show me the way to go. Love, Me
