I grew up with him. John Wayne movies were numero-uno in my midwestern house. Dad liked the Duke.
Somehow, John Wayne always saved the day. With his gravelly voice (it sounded like rocks slowly rolling down a hill) John said the right thing (even if it was in an awkward man’s man way)
Best of all, most of his movies ended happily. John tipped his cowboy hat and rode off into the sunset. Everyone sighed and wished life could be that way.Brad and I camped the Arizona desert. Hiking in the midst of cacti and sheer rock walls, I thought about my buddy John.
Here are some Arizona views along with John Wayne quotes, and, as this Type A Lady would have it, their Biblical counterparts.
“Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway.” – John Wayne
Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. – Deut 31:6
“When the road looks rough ahead, remember the “Man Upstairs” and the word H-O-P-E. Hang onto both and tough it out.” – John Wayne
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. – Isaiah 40:31
A man’s got to have a code, a creed to live by. – John Wayne
Jesus replied:
Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself. — Matt 22:37,38
“Whoa, take ‘er easy there, Pilgrim.”
Stop your striving and recognize that I am God! I will be exalted over the nations! I will be exalted over the earth! – Psalm 46:10
Loved the post. I used to live in Tucson and I miss the desert now that I am back in the Northwest. My father looked and sounded a lot like John Wayne. He is gone now, but when I am lonesome for him, I can always put on a John Wayne movie. Art imitating life…or is it the other way around?

Ah…sweet Valerie! My daddy is gone, too. I miss him and remember him when I see a cardinal – I even wrote a blog post about him! Check it out by searching “cardinal” – hang in there up north! Sending love!
