Need to feel New? Join God in a Thrift Hunt!

I’m cheap. I love the satisfaction of finding a bargain. That’s why I love thrift stores. When my daughter is in town from New York, we make our way to our favorite Thrifts.  There’s something about the hunt. There’s romance in repurposing common things or even discarded things.

I’ve been feeling kind-of used up lately.

-What has happened to the old, vibrant, “Zest for God’s Work Type A Girl”?

I used to be a dynamo. Now I’m just used up. I need some heavy duty repurposing. I need to be a new thing.

Enter: God. God is the one who can see value even in one of His well-used kids. God’s the best thrift shopper. He looks around and picks me out. He’s ready to make me new again. He doesn’t care if I’m acting like a blockhead.

I just gotta be available. Gotta put myself out there and cling to His Words:

See, I am creating a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.- Isaiah 43:19

And he who was seated on the throne said, “Behold, I am making all things new.” Also he said, “Write this down, for these words are trustworthy and true. – Rev 21:5

…to be made new in the attitude of your minds;  and to put on the new self, created to be like God in true righteousness and holiness. – Ephesians 4:23

Create in me a clean heart, O God,
And renew a right spirit within me. – Psalm 51:10

So there. I have justified my tendency toward the bargain. I’m making old stuff new again, just like God does for me.I’m gonna think about this every time I go on a thrifty hunt. I’m choosing the best bargain to repurpose. God is choosing me (and YOU) to restore and renew.

– Waste not, want not. – See you at the thrift shop!

  2. My eyes are dry
    My faith is old
    My heart is hard
    My prayers are cold
And I know how I ought to be
Alive to You and dead to me
    But what can be done
For an old heart like mine
    Soften it up
    With oil and wine
The oil is You, Your Spirit of love
    Please wash me anew
With the wine of Your Blood

    1. You are so right, Denise! I am glad the Bible says in Col 3:10 – “and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him.” — WE are being renewed all the time. It is an ongoing process! Woohoo!
