Mom Tips…from Gran

Wowsers! Whoopee! The Type A Lady is going to be a grandma! I’m over the top excited and as always, overthinking the process. (After all, I’m Type A!)

I’m not sure about this grandma stuff…I’m even rethinking the name…but I LOVE the concept!

GRAN! That’s it! I’ll be “GRAN” in tribute to my great grandmother Boyd! -Gotta start saying “Gran” loud in front of my daughter’s stomach!

All this baby talk has taken me back to my momming days. I didn’t always get it right – but – I did LOVE.

Whether I was angry, joyful, goofy, confusing, uncertain, mindful, pushy or pleasant, I, first and foremost, LOVED my girls.

I still do…and all those above words still apply to my momming today.

Now – on to tackle grandma planning. I gotta make a list. (Type A, remember?)

 Mom & Grandma List

1. Hold on

– I’ll never forget holding my newborns. It was as if they were attached physically to my body. Soft and cuddly. That was easy stuff. Holding on gets harder when kids are hurting you. One of the best ways you can hold your children is through prayer. Prayer works when toddlers are kicking and screaming. Prayer works when teens are yelling and complaining. Prayer works when adult kids are dismissive and aloof. Keep holding on to your kids in prayer.

Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer – Romans 2:12

2. Let go

From the day you let them toddle and tumble to the day you put them on the plane to NYC – You have to let them go.

3. Never leave

Even if you let your kids go, they need to know you’ll truly never leave them all alone. When my daughter was a teen, she wanted to hop in a car and drive to a memorial rally on a deserted road where a classmate had been killed. I wouldn’t let her go without me. She hated me for it. I drove. She walked away from me to join the group. I sat in the car and prayed for every teen who passed by. I let her go, but I wanted her to know, no matter what, I would not leave.

Never will I leave you nor forsake you. – Hebrews 13:5

4. Be willing to be the bad guy

My daughter spent a lot of time by the front door. Why? That was the time out corner.  — Man did she get mad!  I ignored her and let her sit. I was the bad guy for a good reason.

Raise up a child in the way he should go and in the end he will not depart from it. – Proverbs 22:6

5. Forgive your child

I guarantee your child  is gonna hurt you. You must let go of the hurt. Give it to God. Forgive.

…Forgive as the Lord forgave you. – Colossians 3:13

6. Ask for forgiveness

I guarantee you are going to hurt your kid. We are not perfect. It won’t hurt your credibility to say, “I’m sorry” when you blow it.

7. Forgive yourself

I’m good at guilt. Guilt is a devil’s tool. It distracts. As a mom you will make mistakes. You’ve got to forgive yourself. Look into the face of Jesus. He loves you. He forgives you. Forgive yourself and move forward. Besides, God can even use our mistakes.

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose – Romans 8:28

8.  Say no

I said “NO” big time when my children were growing up. It’s not popular to say no, but it’s important. We can’t be our kids’ buddy. We have to be the mom.

9. Remember your  Legacy is in your LOVE – not in things

I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Christ who gives me strength – Phil 4:13,14

10.   Trust God

This should be number one, but I close with it for emphasis. You may not always have your kids near.  You will always have your Lord and Savior. Right here. Right now. God is always with you.

Trust God to love your kids. Trust Him to love you. Trust Him to guide you.  No matter what…Trust God

  1. Loved the photos, and such a great read! Fantastic advice Laurie, I needed that! Sometimes in the midst of Parenting ( and Grandparenting) we forget who is really in control. He’s right beside us, guiding us ( if we get out of His way and let Him)🙋🏼‍♀️
