Oldster Belts Songs or…Life is a Stage, You’d Better Get Your Act Together

There’s 52 years difference. That doesn’t matter. We’re a team. We’re singing buddies.

Well folks, I’m singing and dancing again.  I’ve joined a beautiful cast of performers in Godspell. Our ages range from 15 years to 68.  Would you like to guess who’s 68?

Godspell is not only a beautiful story of redemption and love, it’s also the story of many generations coming together to sing and dance to bring joy.

Godspell is a presentation of the Gospel of Matthew.

While it’s not precise, it is noteworthy.

I’m grateful I get to share with this cast of kids. I guess I’m the biggest (albeit shortest)  kid.

Here’s my perspective. Any time we can talk about God, His message touches hearts.

In this case, we’re singing about God. That’s even better!

My performance in Godspell became more about ministry and fellowship than theater and acting.

These kids and I never leave the stage for a couple of hours. Everyone has something beautiful to contribute.

And then there’s the music.

One song in particular captured my soul.

Nestled near the end of Godspell is the lovely song, “Beautiful City.” The song settled me down and got me thinking. Right there onstage, I was touched.

Jesus sang:

“We can build a beautiful city…yes we can, yes we can…”

Sitting crossed-legged on a silent stage, He continued:

“We may not reach the ending,

But we can start

Slowly, but truly mending

Brick by brick,

Heart by heart.

Now, maybe now

We start learning how…We can build a beautiful city

Not a city of Angels, but we can build a city of man.”

I would hang my head on the next part.

-A good bit of acting? Maybe. Maybe not.

“When your trust is all but shattered,

When you faith is all but killed

You can give up, bitter and battered,

Or you can slowly start to build.”

At this point, I would raise my head and look hopefully at Jesus.

I always look hopefully to Jesus.

The reality of Jesus’ hope is palpable onstage and, for this old actress, offstage too.

Friends, if you’ve been broken or battered by life experiences, remember not to give up.

-Just slowly start to build…
