I’m taking a walk today. I’m sick, but that’s OK. I steer clear of others.
I’m walking the alleys by everyone’s back door.

You can learn a lot from back doors. I find them so very very charming.

A back door is personal. It’s where we lean the wheelbarrow.

It’s where the ladder hangs. It’s where we hide the trash can.

My village has friendly back doors.
In spite of chipped paint and an occasional lost toy, I find them inviting.

Only special friends use the back door. We invite them to walk right in.
C’mon into the mudroom stack of shoes!

-Gather around the laundry pile! Climb on over the kitchen clutter!
Back door friends don’t care. Back door folks are friendly folks. They’re safe.
Back door friends are safe
I’ve always wanted to do a class called “Back Door Bible Study.”
Come as you are and don’t trip on the broken step!

As I take my secret walk – savoring your back doors, I start thinking about Jesus. (After all, it’s Christmas – New Year – New Beginnings – all that Jesus stuff!)
Jesus is a back door kind of guy. No fluff… No doorbell needed.
I think Jesus comes to our back doors, not the well-groomed fronts.

A lot of us hide stuff back by the door where we think folks won’t see.
Jesus plows past the shovels and the spades
and the lawnmower we forgot to put away.

Jesus reassures us He doesn’t care what we’ve hidden.
As a matter of fact, Jesus specializes in opening doors – even imperfect back doors.
Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
-Rev 3:20

Welp, I think 2024 will bring a Back Door Bible Study.
Stay tuned!

I’m feeling better and your back doors have inspired me to roll away my errant Halloween pumpkins and Thanksgiving leaves.
I’ll pick up the fallen Christmas wreath and the lean-to rake at my back door.

I’ll also leave the light on.
You really can’t fail if you shine a light…even at your back door.
Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand,
and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way,
let your light shine before others,
that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.
– Matt 5:15-16
I’ll see you by the alley in 2024.
We’ve got some good lessons to learn!
Love, Laurie
